Our Service to Local Businesses

Since October 2004, providers of goods and services , who have not done so already, should have begun to make changes to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act to make the Borough a more accessible place.

Here at the Bureau however, we recognise that this can seem an overwhelming task, particularly for the smaller businesses who are already struggling with increasing red tape and legislation.

This is why we have decided to offer a free and practical information service to help businesses through this process. We are compiling an extensive resource to help Owners and Managers decide what they need to do. It consists of:

• A self Assessment check list to identify what areas need to be improved to make a service more accessible.
• A resource pack to go along with this, which will indicate what costs might be involved at each stage to make changes and adaptations. In particular we are looking at low cost and no cost alternatives, helping people to think creatively about what is achievable and how to go about it.
• A list of recognised Access Auditors, for those ready to draw up Business plans to facilitate major changes and contact details for Access Consultants for more structural changes which will need specialist advice.
• Information on specialist suppliers of such things as portable ramps, clear signage, braille translators, platform lifts and audio visual equipment etc.

We are also maintaining up to date information on VAT relief, potential funding and tax concessions so that we can pass on this valuable information which we hope will save people money as they consider making expensive changes.
