How to Get a Wheelchair - Manual (Not powered)
If a wheelchair is necessary for the long term, the hospital or GP will arrange for an assessment at the Wheelchair Assessment Centre MDG Hospital
Telephone: 01625 661064
A straightforward attendant wheelchair or pushchair can usually be provided fairly quickly by referral from the GP, (giving height and weight and asking for any additional requirements such as
a simple cushion)
For any other type of wheelchair, an appointment is made for an assessment by a therapist or technician. The client is then given a prescription for a wheelchair and one of three choices using
the wheelchair voucher scheme:
-
To use the voucher at the centre as full payment for a basic NHS chair
-
To make an additional contribution towards choosing a more expensive chair from the wheelchair centre
-
To take the prescription and voucher to a private supplier where it can be used as part payment towards the cost of a wheelchair
Where to borrow a Wheelchair
The hospital will usually loan out a wheelchair which is only needed for a short period for anyone they are discharging home. For other people who only want to borrow a wheelchair for a short
period:
