If you find using a computer uncomfortable or if you have never used a computer because you have a disability which you think would cause problems, we might be able to help.
We will be offering free and informal visits to the comfortable and supportive environment of the Disability Information Bureau to discuss particular difficulties and explore alternatives which would make things easier for you. This may take place in just a single session or a series of visits for more complex problems.
Once you are comfortable with the appropriate hardware and accessibility settings, you will be offered the opportunity to continue learning, by identifying what your own personal needs are, for example using e-mail or shopping on the internet.
We will supply you with the details of how you can get the best from a standard computer, showing, for example what mouse or keyboard is appropriate, right down to screen font size or colour schemes.
Instructions on the system settings can be provided so that you can carry out these changes on your own computer or you can take them to your local IT centre.
We will also be offering training to use DragonNaturally Speaking voice
recognition technology. This software is potentially extremely useful for people who have difficulty using their hands, as you train the computer to take instructions from your voice. We have an abundance of other speaclised software such as Screen magnifiers (Lunar) and Screen readers (Hal-Supernova), as well as software that can help with Dyslexia (Inspiration and text prediction).
